The Widły Ridge, connecting Łomnicki Peak with Kieżmarski Peak, is one of the most spectacular and iconic ridge traverses in the entire Tatra Mountains. Completing this route is a dream for many climbers. For certified mountain guides it represents a serious and demanding objective – one reserved for experienced and well-prepared clients.

Route Description
The ridge can be climbed in both directions, though the most popular option is from west to east, starting on Łomnicki Peak. In this direction, the technical crux consists of two long pitches graded around UIAA IV, located above the lowest saddle in the ridge and finishing near its highest point.
Climbing the ridge in the opposite direction – from Kieżmarski Peak – offers slightly harder but shorter crux sections, reaching UIAA grade V.

The majority of the ridge, however, involves terrain in the II-III difficulty range. While technically easier, it is often exposed and at times loose, requiring solid movement skills and efficient progression. To complete the traverse in good time – typically allowing for a lift-assisted approach via Lomnické Saddle and descent to Skalnaté Pleso before lifts close – you must be confident moving quickly in this type of alpine terrain.

Key Considerations
Preparation is crucial. Before attempting the ridge, it’s important to:
- Study the route description carefully
- Memorize key transitions between the north and south sides of the ridge
- Identify rappel points in advance
- Be efficient and confident with rope management
Rappelling sections, in particular, require smooth and well-practiced rope handling to avoid delays.

Time & Logistics
The ridge traverse itself typically takes 5 to 7 hours.
In addition, you should account for:
- Ascent to Lomnický Peak
- Descent from Kežmarský Peak
Together, these add approximately 3-4 hours, making this a full-day alpine objective.

Advanced Options
For a more ambitious outing, the traverse can be combined with a route on the south face of Kieżmarski Peak, such as the classic Puškáš Route or the more demanding Wielkie Zacięcie (Great Dihedral).
Linking these climbs creates a truly alpine-scale link-up – an unforgettable challenge even for experienced climbers.
